Miami City Info:
Miami is a major city in southeastern Florida. Miami and the surrounding metropolitan area are situated on northern Biscayne Bay between the Everglades and the Atlantic Ocean.

As a point of interest, Miami is the only U.S. city to have been planned by a woman. Julia Tuttle, a Clevelander, arrived in Miami in 1891 and bought several hundred acres of land on the bank of the Miami River. She convinced New York financier Henry M. Flagler of the area’s vast potential and persuaded him to extend his Florida East Coast Railroad to Miami in 1896, the year the city was incorporated.

The second largest city in the state, a port of entry, and the transportation and business hub of Southern Florida, it is also a popular and famous resort and hosts a beach that is 7 miles long. Tourism remains a major industry, followed by manufacturing and commerce.

Miami has an international airport and is the principal American port for cruise ships to the Caribbean. The city is also the processing and shipping hub of a large agricultural region and a center for rebuilding and repairing aircrafts. Manufactures include clothing, transportation equipment, machinery, plastics, and electronic components.

Other industries are printing and publishing, fishing, and shell fishing. Miami is the home to the National Hurricane Center (at Florida International Univ.) and the headquarters of the U.S. Armed Forces Southern Command, responsible for military operations in Central and South America.

Pro Player Stadium is home of professional football’s Miami Dolphins and baseball’s Florida Marlins and the site of college football’s Orange Bowl contest. The Heat (basketball) play in Miami, and the Florida Panthers (hockey) in suburban Sunrise. Miami is the seat of a number of institutions of higher education, including Barry University, St. Thomas University, Florida Memorial College, Florida International University, and the largest junior college in the country (Miami-Dade Community College). The University of Miami is in nearby Coral Gables. A number of state parks, gardens, and major tourist attractions are in the area.
