Calgary City Info
Calgary is the largest city in the province of Alberta, Canada. It is located in the south of the province, in a region of foothills and high plains and approximately 80 km east of the front ranges of the Canadian Rockies. Calgary is the third largest municipality, by population, in Canada.

The economy in Calgary and Alberta is now booming, and the region of nearly 1.1 million people is still among the fastest growing in the country. While the oil and gas industry embraces most of the economy, the city has invested a great deal into other areas. Tourism is perhaps one of the fastest growing industries in the city. Over 4.5 million people now visit the city on an annual basis for its many festivals and attractions, as well as the Calgary Stampede. The nearby mountain resort towns of Banff, Lake Louise, and Canmore are also becoming extremely popular with tourists.

Calgary has a highland continental climate with long, but highly variable, winters and short, warm summers. The climate is greatly influenced by the city’s elevation and close proximity to the Rocky Mountains. Although Calgary’s winters can be uncomfortably cold; warm, dry Chinook winds routinely blow into the city from the Pacific Ocean during the winter months, giving Calgarians a break from the cold.

Calgary hosts many festivals. These include the growing Calgary International Film Festival, the Calgary Folk Music Festival, The Greek Festival, Carifest, the Lilac Festival, GlobalFest, the Calgary Fringe Festival, Summerstock, Expo Latino, and many other cultural and ethnic festivals. Calgary’s most well-known event is the Calgary Stampede, which occurs every July.

Calgary’s downtown can easily be recognized by its numerous skyscrapers. Some of these structures, such as the Calgary Tower and the Pengrowth Saddledome are unique enough to be symbols of Calgary.

Edmonton City Info
Edmonton is the capital of the Canadian province of Alberta, situated in the central region of the province. Edmonton is an area with some of the most fertile farm land known to the prairies.

The main airport, Edmonton’s International Airport is located south of the city limits, near the city of Leduc. It is the fifth busiest airport in Canada, with just over 4.5 million passengers.

Edmonton is Canada’s second most populous provincial capital (after Toronto) and is known as a well-rounded cultural, government, and educational centre. It plays host to a year-round list of world-class festivals, earning it the title of Festival Cities. It is home to North America’s largest mall, West Edmonton Mall, and Canada’s largest historical park, Fort Edmonton Park.

The first major oil discovery for Edmonton and the rest of the province was made on February 13, 1947. Although oil reserves were already known as early as 1914 to exist in the southern parts of Alberta, they produced very little oil compared to those around Edmonton. Because most of Alberta’s oil reserves were found to be concentrated in central and northern Alberta, the city became home to most of Alberta’s oil production and refining.

Edmonton’s river valley constitutes the longest stretch of connected urban parkland in North America, and Edmonton has the highest per capita area of parkland of any Canadian city.

Edmonton is home to the world’s largest shopping mall hosting many other attractions for the whole family. Come experience one of the world’s eight wonders!
