As a point of interest, Miami is the only U.S. city to have been planned by a woman. Julia Tuttle, a Clevelander, arrived in Miami in 1891 and bought several hundred acres of land on the bank of the Miami River. She convinced New York financier Henry M. Flagler of the area’s vast potential and persuaded him to extend his Florida East Coast Railroad to Miami in 1896, the year the city was incorporated.
Detroit is a major port city located on the Detroit River, just north of Windsor, Ontario in the Midwestern region of the United States. Today, it is recognized as the world’s traditional automotive center and is also a key source of legacies celebrated by the city’s two familiar nicknames, Motor City and Motown.
Since 1990, plans to enrich the riverfront area from the Ambassador Bridge to Belle Isle (the largest island park in a U.S. city) with a variety of parks, residential and commercial buildings. Detroit is also trying to freshen up its riverfront to make it similar to its neighboring city across the river in Windsor, Ontario. Ambitious architects are hoping to revive the riverfront to a pedestrian site rather than for industrial development.
